Little Monkey is curled up on my legs, we still have free HBO, the husband is working hard in the kitchen, and my favorite lamb stew with dark beer and barley is cooking in a cast-iron pot.

Alec’s birthday beach weekend

Joanie, Oskar and the kids invited us to celebrate “Uncle Ally’s” 42nd birthday at the family’s beach house. The kids pulled together a (sorta) surprise Scooby-Doo themed birthday party, complete with homemade cupcakes and frosting, balloons and Scooby masks, plates and cups. Even the chicken dance made the list!
Portland’s Greek festival

Succulent lamb rotating on a smokey spit, wafting sweet charred goodness our direction, deep-fried dough balls sprinkled with cinnamon, rows of desserts drowning in honey and nuts, and a beautiful, crisp fall day with Rob, Meg and Mr. Casey all made for a nice afternoon at Portland’s annual Greek festival.
Hello fall. I’ve actually missed you.

Alec and I decided to take advantage of what might be the last glorious day of summer-like weather by hiking up to the Pittock Mansion this morning. We were treated to that crispness in the air that zings your skin and flushes your cheeks the perfect pink. We couldn’t have asked for better morning sun. [...]

What’s that I hear? You think the Cal Bears are overrated? Yes, I think you are correct. Great game today down at Autzen stadium. We’re both sunburned and full of salty curly fries, but riding high on the huge defeat of the number 6 ranked Cal Bears. A big thank you to Chris for the [...]

We got in touch with our German heritage today (read: sausages, deep fried onions, snow cones, beer, face painting, hay mazes, wiener dog races, lederhosen and yodeling). Oktoberfest, Mt. Angel style, is a hoot.

Elaine and Pat invited us to spend a night at her aunt and uncle’s beach house. Karen and Bill sold their house in the bay area about 6 years ago and picked the loveliest lot to build their dream home in Manzanita. Bill and Karen lived in Japan for 5 years and collected a lifetime’s [...]

Alec’s former law partners, their wives and sweet little guy, Emmett, joined us for grilled turkey burgers, homemade macaroni salad and hazelnut crisp with berries and peaches a la mode on our new deck last night. We really hustled that afternoon in preparation: we finished lining the pergola with strands of white lights and hung [...]
Baseball Sunday

What a beautiful weekend in the Pacific Northwest! We were lucky enough to have been invited to attend the Mariners vs. Red Sox game in Seattle yesterday. One of Alec’s former law partners treated us to a great day of baseball in the Emerald City. All was perfect except for the final outcome (Red Sox [...]
A perfect Oregon kind of day

It all started the best way I know how: Bagels at Kettleman’s and a latte with a foam heart on top at Stumptown. By 8:45am we were well on our way heading east on I-84, windows down, singing along to the Rolling Stones. We started our ascent up Dog Mountain and, let me tell ya, [...]
