L.A.

If reincarnation is indeed the delightful next act then, dear Lord, hear my prayer: I’d like the opportunity to relive this past weekend, just 3 days, from inspiring start to delightful finish; let me have an entire day to wander through architecture and gardens, all perched on top of a sunny California hill. I want [...]

A good doctor is hard to find

I recently sent an email to all my smartest girlfriends, asking if they had a good doctor to refer my way. I’ve had a so-so doctor for the last, um, too many years and decided it was time for a change. My lovelies got back to me within the hour and were eager to rave [...]

Low and behold

One of the benefits of remodeling our backyard has been the discovery of trees we had never paid much attention to. Our favorite backyard realization has been our lovely smoke tree. We always knew it was there, but the poor thing was lackluster, ignored and choked from sunlight. Having removed the big, half-dead pear tree [...]

Cousin Drew marries beautiful Jen

I just returned from, hands down, the best wedding I’ve ever attended! The entire weekend was equal parts touching and a down right kick in the southern pants. From start to finish all the Ludlows and Cousin Amanda had a blast laying by the pool, eating great food, and enjoying a hefty helping of southern [...]

What matters

Seth Godin is very wise as he reminds me what really matters:

When you love the work you do and the people you do it with, you matter.

Beach trip with Elaine and Pat

Elaine and Pat invited us to spend a night at her aunt and uncle’s beach house. Karen and Bill sold their house in the bay area about 6 years ago and picked the loveliest lot to build their dream home in Manzanita. Bill and Karen lived in Japan for 5 years and collected a lifetime’s [...]

Alec climbs his first turbine

It was just another day at the office for Alec and some of his coworkers! Vestas turbines are humongous: 3 football fields tall with blades the length of an 18-wheeler. No wonder they wear steel-toe boots, hard hats, safety goggles and harnesses with massive carabiners. Safety first, safety last, safety always. Alec said the experience [...]

I made this unexpectedly sweet, hot and salty salad last night – perfection on a warm summer night. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons champagne vinegar (or white balsamic vinegar)
2 teaspoons fresh thyme, choppedĀ
1 small shallot, minced
1 serrano chili, stemmed and sliced into small half-rounds
salt
1 small seedless watermelon
1/3 pound feta cheese, sliced [...]

Alec’s former law partners, their wives and sweet little guy, Emmett, joined us for grilled turkey burgers, homemade macaroni salad and hazelnut crisp with berries and peaches a la mode on our new deck last night. We really hustled that afternoon in preparation: we finished lining the pergola with strands of white lights and hung [...]
